With so many types of vacuum cleaners available in the market, it proves difficult choosing the right one for you. The basic two varieties are uprights that you push and use, and canisters which you pull whilst using.

1. Basically, uprights are great for cleaning only carpets whilst canisters are more versatile in usage, but is difficult to move around. Stick vacuums are not as powerful as uprights whilst handheld vacuum cleaners are best used for cleaning difficult spots.

6. The cord of the cleaner should be long enough for effective cleaning in your home, without having to change outlets too often.

7. Vacuum cleaners may be made of plastic or metal, metal versions are more durable.

8. Don't buy attachments that you will not need; it's a waste of money. The essentials are corner cleaners, detachable hoses and extensions whilst upholstery brushes are required only if you have drapes.

9. Though some vacuum cleaners have headlights, these cleaners are useful only if you live in a dark home. Otherwise it's more a novelty than a necessity.

Last, but not least, keep your budget in mind whilst buying your vacuum cleaner. The amount you pay for the cleaner should be worth it.
